Happy Saturday,
As someone who lives, breathes, and sleeps words, you can imagine turning it all off is hard.📴
Words and ideas come to me at all hours of the day and night. In fact, quite often, I’ll think about the contents of my newsletter all night long, waking up with different ideas for headlines or tangents. It’s quite possible that what you’re reading came to me in a dream. 🛌
For the most part, this constant creative stream is pretty cool and makes life more interesting. But listen, sometimes… I just want the words spinning in my head to take a little break. 🤫
If you’re wondering what this is like, think back to the movie Ghost, and the scene where Whoopi Goldberg was freaking out because all the spirits in NYC got wind that she was open for business and were lining up to see her:
It’s nuts, I’m telling you.
If I’m not 🧑💻 doing client work, blog posts, my newsletter, or other projects, I’m crafting or answering emails, creating social media content, or planning all of the above. (And, FTR, I’m doing all of that with great ❤️. Just want to be sure that’s clear.)
Some of the above projects (content creation & newsletters) call for a lot of time, while other tasks (returning emails or making to-do lists) should be short and to the point.
But here’s the problem: I will hem and haw over the simplest things.
Returning an email to say I had a great meeting? Adios 30 minutes of my day.
What’s on my to-do list? Oh, I don’t know… maybe spending ten minutes choosing the perfect pen, a half-hour writing my list, 15 minutes for edits, and then I’m ready to roll.
Now, don’t worry, I’m kind of kidding - really. I do try to be as efficient as possible in my work. (🤓I’m talking to you, potential clients.)
But part of what I confessed above is pretty spot on. And I think we may all have our own versions of it. We overthink things and waste a lot of time in the process.
Perhaps we all just need to SIMMER DOWN?
Well, the other night, I finally simmered myself down.
The result?
Something happened that gave me one of the biggest revelations of my career (and life).
I think it could help you in your world, too.
