š¤The Ultimate Tax Prep Tool Kitš§āš»
Has nothing to do with income, taxes, or Uncle Sam.
Can someone please tell me why we donāt talk more about this quote?
Happy Leap Day!
Are you celebrating by⦠doing your taxes? Or thinking about your taxes? If so, youāre in the right place. If not, youāre also in the right place because wherever you are in your tax journey, I want you to know I š you.
And since youāre opening this on a Leap Day, I feel like we can play with time and timelines a bit, so letās go back a few days to when I wrote this email.
It was Monday night when I wrote this newsletter.
I took a walk before dinner to get some fresh air and appreciate the gorgeous š.
I thought the walk and my delicious chickpea tofu and sweet potato leftovers would invigorate me before sitting down to work on what youāre reading.
But do you know what?
I was spent. š„±
Not from my walk. Not from a weekend of travel. Not because of lack of sleep.š
I was exhausted because I spent the weekend getting my taxes ready for my CPA.
And itās not like my taxes are super complicated⦠but theyāre complicated enough for a writer (like myself). I stress the writer part to remind all the numbers people that my brain works differently than yours.
While youāre creating spreadsheets, Iām writing a newsletter about my theory on Excel. (I try to stay away from it because I feel like it could lead to heart disease. All those columns and formulas. š«So. Very. Stressful.š«)
And I know. I know. Excel spreadsheets would make itemizing everything so much easier. I do use Excel a little bit. But a little bit is not an accounting term, nor an efficient way to run oneās finances. I realize I need to upgrade my current systems (which get the job done, btw) so that tax prep and budgeting is much smoother. And frankly, a little more 2024, shall we say.
Alternate Excel theory⦠thereās a reason the āXā is part of their logo. To warn us.
But this knowledge didnāt help me this weekend when my office floor was full of tidy little piles of files and receipts, as well as three Mac devices (for retrieval, email, and YouTube entertainment), and the steady hum of my printer running strong as I curated the snapshot of this past yearās business.
Isnāt that much more interesting than a spreadsheet?
And wouldnāt you know, itās What Iād Rather Be Talking About this week:
It seems to me that systems can work for us
until they donāt.
And yes, I meant to emphasize systems as a broad term to include things like tax prep, budgeting, relationships, jobs, living situations, health practices⦠ETC.
We can skate around doing things the way weāve always done them, thinking weāre the catās meow š
until we finally realize itās time to change things up.
Personally, that realization hit me while surrounded by a sea of receipts, sitting criss-cross apple sauce š§āāļøš in the middle of my office floor on a Saturday night. #laststraw
This is why Iāll be asking my CPA, āTell me again about this thing you call Excel.ā
(And is there a version for Creatives?)
Itās all about continuous improvement, baby.
But hey, good news for you all⦠my weekend of tax hell is your win. Iāve put together some resources below to get you through your tax, school, work, colonoscopy, or any other difficult preps youāve got lined up. Fun stuff to distract or enhance the task at hand.
Letās go.

Simplicity is the name of the game here because if youāre prepping for something, youāve got enough on your plate.

ON A SERIOUS NOTE
Whether youāre facing tax prep, a big work or home project, school work, or find yourself in the midst of a health situation and needing to focus on your recovery⦠the most important key to success is your attitude.
A positive mental attitude not only makes you feel better, it tends to spill over into whatever youāre doing and bring a bit of magic to the challenge at hand.
If you canāt muster up your own magic, reach out to your people and ask them to help.
Weāll get through tax season.
Weāll get through the challenges.
One spreadsheet at a time.
Even without spreadsheets.
See you Saturday,
Abbey
