Buenos Dias,
This week, I’m skipping the pleasantries and getting straight to it.
You’re doing it wrong.
And no, this isn’t a newsletter test. There wasn’t a special way to open this email.
You did that just fine.
I’m also not referring to the 20 Things We Keep Doing Wrong or the fun bantering between husbands and wives over how things should be done. (Which, FYI, my husband and I would dominate if this were an Olympic event.)
And, while the Jack Butler Method of school drop-off is one of my all-time favorite movie moments, I’m not talking about this either.
When I say you’re doing it wrong… I’m referring to your life.
My life too. (I’m also doing it wrong.)
Specifically, the moments when we’re faced with a decision, a crossroad, or realize we’re caught up in a cycle that we know is no bueno.
In these scenarios, there’s a VOICE… an INNER KNOWING, tapping on our car window saying, “Um, excuse me… you’re doing it wrong.”
It’s as if we know what to do, yet we purposely do the opposite.
WHAT’S UP WITH THAT?
This all brings me to…
What I’d Really Be Talking About this week are the times we blow off warnings from our higher self even though we know better.
I know I’ve done it.
I was inspired to think about this idea after listening to an episode of The Radically Loved Podcast, where podcaster and author Robyn Moreno talked about the life-changing moment she chose a work event over her child’s Christmas program. She wanted to go to her kid’s performance. She knew that’s where she belonged. Yet, she went ahead to the work party anyway, got a bit buzzed on vino, and ended up thinking… JUST WHAT THE HECK AM I EVEN DOING WITH MY LIFE? The experience made her realize she was working so hard that she was missing her life. In this episode, Robyn tells how she got her life together. Spoiler, it involved using her inner knowing for guidance. (Also, her book, Get Rooted, was just rereleased!)
And while our inner knowing won’t help us at kid’s drop off, I bet we’ll feel a lot better all around if we show it a little love.
Let’s start listening,
Abbey
LISTEN
First, going with the “you’re doing it wrong” theme… this week’s episode of SoMoney talks to therapist, podcaster & author Amy Morin about an article she wrote that was called “13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do.” She got paid $15 for the article… it went viral, got over 50 million views & led to a book deal.
Next, in this episode of the She Means Business Show, host Carrie Green talks about how to get intentional about life and stop living your life in default. (Which I translate to be one version of “doing it wrong.”)
WATCH
I’ll give you some solid purchasing options in the BUY section, but in case you don’t want to spend money, watch this to learn how to shop your closet for summer outfits.
But whatever you do, don’t make these fashion mistakes for 2023. YouTuber Shea Whitney sets us straight in 10 Shirts Out of Style… What to Wear Instead in 2023.
I was looking for summer makeup trends, but the stuff I found felt like SNL skit material, so let’s try this solid video about “What Makes Makeup Modern…” because who wants an outdated makeup look, right?
Healthy food prep for summer! Find out some great smoothie freezer pack ideas, Mediterranean Diet High Protein Recipes, or let’s hear it from Cowboy Kent for grilling, as I’ve never seen it. Burger Dog, anyone? This one’s for the meat eaters out there.
READ
I'm outsourcing book reviews since finishing one book takes me about twelve years. Today, let’s hear from Lizz - a rockstar yogi (she’s on her way to 100 hot yoga classes this summer) and super fast reader (every time I go on social media, she’s posted another book she’s read). Lizz recently tackled The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jackson Reid. This is the first of four reviews from this awesome yogi bookworm. Oh, another fun fact - Lizz also makes a mean smoothie bowl and is a juicing machine. Check out all of her inspo on Instagram - @lovingthislizz.
BUY
Sorel sandals - so much to say about this brand. Whether you’re kickin’ it around town or headed for a European walking extravaganza, Sorel should be your go-to. Save time running around to find the perfect summer sandals, and get some Sorels.
Art sneakers - you read it right. Why not combine comfort and art? That’s what UIN, the Spanish “Art Travel Shoe” company thinks. I can’t stop thinking about these retro sneaks, and I’m trying to justify buying them… Art is good for your health, and so is walking. Or?
Looking for a new polo for Pops this Father’s Day? Or, to my guy readers, maybe you want some new duds. Whatever the case, check out these sources - the Daily Mom, this feature in Men’s Health, or True Classics.
ON A SERIOUS NOTE
The notion of listening to our inner voice isn’t a one-time thing - as in, you decide to forgo a study abroad program in college because of your boyfriend even though your inner voice is saying, “Girl, you’re gonna regretttt this.”
(I totally just pulled that one out of thin air…)
We are constantly being fed intel from that voice - call it what you want, intuition, inner voice, or higher self.
(I call mine “home base.”)
In fact, it’s like we have insider access to the answers.
Yet, we think we’re smarter…
And proceed to do things that interfere with us living our best lives.
Maybe if we’d step outside of ourselves and get honest about our lives, we’d see the solutions clearly.
I bet we could even come up with an action plan.
So, please… don’t be a moron.
Listen to that voice in your head.
Over and out,
Abbey
P.S. Thanks so much for listening! If you like what you see… I’d love it if you’d forward this to a friend. I appreciate you taking the time to hear What I’d Rather Be Talking About.
